ON THIS DAY- On this day in 1605, the failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English Catholics, known as the Gunpowder Plot, took place. The day is now celebrated with fireworks as Guy Fawkes Day. The conflict of WWI widened on this day in 1914 when France and Britain declared war on the Ottoman Empire. Anglo-French forces began their initial assault on Port Said and Port Fouad during the Tripartite Aggression on this day in 1956. On this day in 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to an unprecedented third term as president of the US. India launched its first interplanetary spacecraft, the Mars Orbiter Mission, which was unmanned on this day in 2013. Also, George Foreman became the oldest heavyweight boxing champ when he defeated 26-year-old Michael Moorer on this day in 1994. This time two years ago we were reporting on the UK suspending flights to Sharm El Sheikh in the wake of the Metrojet flight crash.
