ON THIS DAY- On this day in 1956, the allied forces of the Tripartite Aggression took control of the Suez Canal Zone and declared a ceasefire. UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold announced “the allies had accepted the terms of the UN ceasefire and had ordered troops to stop fighting.” The UN condemned South Africa’s apartheid regime and called on all its members to end economic and military relations with the country in 1962. The second phase of the Russian Bolshevik revolution of 1917 began on this day, after the Bolsheviks and Left Socialist Revolutionaries staged a nearly bloodless coup, occupying government buildings, telegraph stations, and other strategic points.
