Is the EU sweeping Egypt’s human rights issues under the rug to protect its own regional interests? Resuming annual “high-level” meetings with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Brussels next week could mean that “the EU prioritizes security, migration and trade at the expense of human rights,” says Amnesty International in a new piece. Shoukry will be heading to Brussels on 25 July for the first of such meetings since the 2011 uprising. “With concerns over regional security and migration on the rise there are fears that EU member states are more willing to turn a blind eye to grave human rights violations in the country.”
