El Sisi’s popularity takes a hit as public discontent over island agreement grows

The clandestine negotiations between Egypt and Saudi Arabia to hand over the islands of Tiran and Sanafir to our neighbors across the pond precipitated public discontent over the faltering economy, a continued crackdown on dissent, and icy relations with Italy over the death of Giulio Regeni, according to the piece. “Sisi has become less popular with time because it has been demonstrated that those who really rule in Egypt now are the agencies of the deep state — security organs and the bureaucracy,” said Osama al-Ghazali Harb, former leader of the opposition Democratic Front party.
