The UN will release a report this month that identifies a subsidiary of the Arab Organization for Industrialization as the customer for a shipment of North Korean weapons that was intercepted off the coast of Egypt in 2016, Declan Walsh writes for the New York Times. Egypt has not only been buying arms from Pyongyang, but allegedly been allowing North Korean officials to use their embassy in Cairo “as a base for military sales across the region,” according to unnamed US and UN officials. The US had suspended USD 291 mn-worth of aid to Egypt last year, reportedly to pressure Cairo to cut ties with Pyongyang. “Washington worries that North Korea, a longtime supplier of ballistic missile technology to Egypt, is still supplying missile parts,” the Middlebury Institute of International Studies’ Andrea Berger says.
