Ahmed Shafik remains the leading story on Egypt in the foreign press
The political circus that is former prime minister Ahmed Shafik’s return to Cairo continues to get heavy play in the foreign press and remains the lead story on Egypt this morning.
Shafik’s daughters wreaked havoc yesterday, claiming he had been “kidnapped” by Egyptian authorities upon his arrival in Cairo. UAE authorities had confirmed earlier in the day that he had left the country, but Egyptian officials did not confirm his arrival in Cairo, according to Reuters. Cairo Airport officials confirmed he was escorted out of the airport by security to an unknown location, according to the AP’s Hamza Hendawi. Shafik’s family lost contact with him for 24 hours, during which time he was denied access to his lawyer, Amira Shafik told Bloomberg. The presidential hopeful’s lawyer, Dina Adly, later announced she had met with Shafik at a hotel in Cairo, but did not confirm he was free to leave the hotel or the country, Reuters says.
Shafik re-emerged by the end of the day to clear the air and reassure everyone that he had not been kidnapped, as we noted in Last Night’s Talk Shows, above. Reuters and the Financial Times both have coverage.
